Author’s comments:
‘The inspiration behind the book came from a desire to create a fictional story from an unashamedly Christian worldview. Much of science-fiction has a secular/naturalistic basis whereas ‘Godstone‘ is travelling in the opposite direction. Having a pirate buried in a local churchyard along with tales of him haunting the area, seemed something of a gift in terms of story-telling. Other historical figures, most notably Isaac Newton, were then added to interact with the fictional ones as they became lost in time.
The story itself for the most part takes place within a fairly small geographical location. In order to broaden out I gave Rachel, one of the main characters, a back story of an upbringing in the U.S. The pirate ‘Trenchie’ is a real historical figure and is buried where the book states. He became my favorite character and when I drive through Tilburstow Hill I can picture in my mind the events that took place there over three centuries ago.
My biggest influence in terms of authors would have to be C.S Lewis. The Narnia Chronicles were very much allegories set in a fantasy world. I took a different approach with Godstone by making the Christian worldview of the book more ‘in your face’. I like the innocence of the Narnia stories and I tried to emulate that while aiming at a slightly older age group. I hope the readers enjoy it.’
